Guilin and Guizhou

Guilin and Guizhou

Guilin City and Guizhou Province are Southwest China's postcard destinations. Guilin's lush landscape of endless, undulating karst mountains is among China's best and most recognisable sights. Guizhou is home to a diverse population of 48 different ethnic minorities. Experience their culture and history in old towns amidst beautiful blue lakes and soaring green mountains.

Guilin and Guizhou: Did you know?

  • People in Guilin refer to their friends as 'Gou Rou', which translate to 'dog meat' in English. This is not an insult, but rather an honour
  • Hilly geography makes many of Guizhou's ethnic minority villages are unreachable by land, so their culture and traditions have evaded modernity
  • 'Impressions of Liu Sanjie', directed by Zhang Yimou (Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony), is an amazing live show in Yangshuo that uses the Li River as a stage, local farmers as actors and colourfully illuminated mountains as a backdrop
  • Guilin Rice Noodle is the area's iconic dish, which can be found anywhere in China, but you shouldn't miss a chance to try it from the source
